After a four-and-a-half-year hiatus, we have restarted our Scene & Heard play-reading events. On February 6th scenes from four new plays by Vancouver Island writers were read by local actor/readers in front of an audience. Total attendance was about 30 -- not a bad new beginning.
The featured play excerpts were written by Raphael Burdman (For God’s Sake), Jessica Schacht and Sam Young (You are Not a Ghost), Margo Goodhand (Some Small Legacy), and Gary Forget (A Father’s Love, A Brother’s Gift).
They were read by Cam Culham, Bindon Kinghorn, Peter McNab, Kelly Hudson, Alison Boston, and Jan Streader.
Here are just a few written comments from the audience after the last event.
"A worthy event and much work…. in organizing. Much appreciated."
"Love how well the actors do the cold read."
"Hearing people read work for the first time unrehearsed. Thanks, I would enjoy seeing and hearing more readings."
We also had some valuable suggestions for improvement and will make a few changes so the audience can better hear the spoken word, such as placing the actors on an elevated stage or having them stand (instead of sit).
